Atomic Structure

Separate hydrogen-like formulas from many-electron rules, then use quantum-number legality and energy ordering as fast option filters.

Atomic Structure has two models: exact one-electron results and qualitative many-electron orbital filling. Advanced distractors deliberately cross those boundaries. Configuration first, then anomaly — half-filled and filled subshells explain most IE and exception stems without memorising tables.

How Advanced asks this

  • Hydrogen-like transition wavelength, energy or series limit
  • de Broglie wavelength and accelerating potential
  • Allowed quantum-number sets and orbital/electron counts
  • Electronic configuration, unpaired electrons and magnetic character
  • Nodes, orbital shapes, penetration or energy-order statements

Traps that leak marks

  • Using Bohr formulas for a many-electron atom
  • Reversing wavelength and energy ratios
  • Taking uncertainty as equality in every situation
  • Using n+l ordering without Pauli/Hund
  • Removing d electrons before ns electrons when forming common transition-metal cations
  • Using Bohr formulas on many-electron atoms
  • Removing d electrons before ns when forming common cations
  • Reversing wavelength and energy ratios

01. Bohr energies and radii are exact only for hydrogen-like one-electron species; nuclear charge enters as Z² in energy and 1/Z in radius.

02. A spectral line is an energy difference, not an orbital energy. Sign describes absorption/emission; wavelength depends on the magnitude.

03. Quantum numbers define allowed states: n sets shell, l subshell, m_l orientation and m_s spin. Counting follows from allowed integer values.

04. For many-electron atoms, penetration and shielding split subshell energies; use n+l ordering, Pauli and Hund, then remember known stability exceptions where relevant.

05. Bohr and hydrogenic energy/radius formulas apply to one-electron species only; many-electron atoms need quantum numbers, Aufbau and spectroscopic logic instead.

06. Legal quantum numbers are ordered constraints: n first, then l = 0…n−1, then m_l, then m_s — not a free shopping list.

07. Spectral lines report |ΔE|; wavelength ratios reverse energy ratios, so always decide whether the stem asks energy, frequency or λ.

Advanced rarely asks a chapter in isolation. These are tagged multi-idea Chemistry stems that touch Atomic Structure — practise the knowledge bridge, not only the single-chapter drill.

Chemistry2026 · Paper 2 · Q17–Q18linked-numerical

Kjeldahl nitrogen + Carius sulphur on related organics

Organic practical – Kjeldahl+Organic practical – Carius+Stoichiometric estimation

Knowledge bridge

Step 1: from structure/formula of L, count N and convert mass to moles of NH₃, then to mL of 1 M H₂SO₄. Step 2: from M, count S and convert to grams of BaSO₄ via Carius stoichiometry. Step 3: keep atomic masses consistent across both linked estimation asks.

Why it feels hard

NCERT ‘end chapter’ methods under numerical pressure; easy arithmetic slips.

What to practise

Treat Kjeldahl/Carius as fixed stoichiometry templates — practise until automatic.

Why methods matter

Common methods that change your score

Energy-level and quantum-number models prevent formula mixing and expose impossible options quickly.

01

Model boundary stamp

Prevents applying E_n∝−Z²/n² to screened multielectron atoms.

Do thisWrite H-like or many-electron before touching energies.

Why it works

Prevents applying E_n∝−Z²/n² to screened multielectron atoms.

See it once

He⁺ obeys Bohr exactly; neutral He does not because electron–electron repulsion splits the simple model.

02

Transition energy first

Avoids reversing levels or attaching wavelength to one level.

Do thisCalculate ΔE=E_final−E_initial, then infer absorption/emission and λ.

Why it works

Avoids reversing levels or attaching wavelength to one level.

See it once

n=3→2 has ΔE<0 for atom, so a photon of magnitude |ΔE| is emitted.

03

Quantum-number sieve

Illegal options die before any counting.

Do thisTest n, then l, then m_l, then m_s in that order.

Why it works

Illegal options die before any counting.

See it once

n=3,l=3 is impossible because l=0,1,2 only; no need to inspect m_l.

04

Box configuration audit

Makes unpaired count, spin and Pauli violations visible.

Do thisDraw only the active subshell boxes and apply Hund before pairing.

Why it works

Makes unpaired count, spin and Pauli violations visible.

See it once

p³ occupies ↑ ↑ ↑, giving three unpaired electrons; pairing early violates the ground-state Hund arrangement.

Read the impact line first. Then notice which family/model was chosen. The solution is written the way your rough sheet should look in the hall.

01

bankFamily · Hydrogenic transition

Sample question

Find the photon energy emitted for H transition n=3→2.

This stem rewards early recognition of the hydrogenic transition model.

Model chosenSubtract hydrogenic energies.

Processed solution

  1. Eₙ=−13.6/n² eV.
  2. |ΔE|=13.6(1/4−1/9).
  3. |ΔE|=1.89 eV.

Answer1.89 eV

Takeaway: Use level differences, not a single-level energy.

02

standardFamily · Quantum numbers and orbital count

Sample question

How many orbitals in n=4 have exactly two angular nodes?

This stem rewards early recognition of the quantum numbers and orbital count model.

Model chosenAngular nodes equal l.

Processed solution

  1. Two angular nodes imply l=2.
  2. For n=4, l=2 is allowed.
  3. A d subshell contains 2l+1=5 orbitals.

Answer5

Takeaway: Translate nodes directly to l.

03

twistFamily · de Broglie and uncertainty

Sample question

An electron and proton have equal de Broglie wavelength. The electron kinetic energy is 100 eV. Find the proton kinetic energy nonrelativistically.

This Advanced-level variation couples hidden constraints with the de broglie and uncertainty model.

Model chosenEqual wavelength means equal momentum, not equal speed.

Processed solution

  1. λ=h/p, so equal λ gives pₑ=pₚ.
  2. Nonrelativistic kinetic energy is p²/(2m).
  3. Therefore Kp/Ke=mₑ/mₚ.
  4. Kp=100/1836 eV.
  5. Thus Kp≈0.0545 eV.

Answer0.0545 eV

Takeaway: Equal momentum makes kinetic energy inversely proportional to mass.

Reusable models

Common question families

Advanced stems cluster. Name the family in 10–15s, write the fast model, then run the same path. Do not invent a new plan each time.

Hall timing

45–75s process

  1. 0–12s
    Decide one-electron spectrum, wave-particle, quantum-number legality, or many-electron configuration.

Underline data, units, phase/standard-state labels and the exact quantity asked. Reject any formula whose assumptions are already violated.

  2. 12–25s
Write Z, initial/final n or the (n,l,m_l,m_s) constraints; for filling write the orbital order.

Write the governing relation symbolically before substitution; define one basis, reference state, or extent variable if the stem mixes quantities.

  3. 25–60s
Use energy difference/counting/filling, preserving transition direction and Pauli–Hund occupancy.

Keep ratios and logarithms exact as long as possible. Carry signs, powers of ten and units on the rough sheet instead of repairing them later.

  4. 60–75s
Check one-electron applicability, sign/order, degeneracy, electron count and known configuration exceptions.

Check dimensions, limiting cases and chemical sense. For multi-correct, test every option independently rather than forcing one common conclusion.
