Capacitance & Dielectrics

Lock battery-connected vs isolated (Q or V fixed), then rebuild C with dielectric, and compute U from the conserved quantity.

Most Advanced capacitor stems hinge on one binary: plates still on a battery (V fixed) or disconnected (Q fixed). κ multiplies C for a filled parallel-plate; energy formulas must use the quantity that actually stayed constant. Capacitor template: redraw network → C_eq → fix Q or V → dielectric model → energy from the constrained variable.

How Advanced asks this

  • C after inserting slab(s) or changing d/A
  • Charge/voltage redistribution on series–parallel networks
  • Energy change: battery vs isolated comparison
  • Force/pressure ideas between plates (conceptual)
  • Equivalent C of mixed dielectric geometries

Traps that leak marks

  • Using ½CV² after disconnecting when Q is what stayed fixed
  • Treating partial dielectric as simply κC₀ without redraw
  • Assuming same charge on parallel capacitors
  • Forgetting battery supplies or takes charge when V is fixed
  • Mixing ε₀A/d with κ in only one plate of a series pair incorrectly
  • Using Q-fixed energy change on a battery-connected capacitor
  • Mis-drawing partial dielectric as the wrong series/parallel model
  • Forgetting that battery can do work when V is fixed

01. C = Q/V. Parallel plate (vacuum): C₀ = ε₀ A/d. Inserting dielectric κ (filling) gives C = κ C₀ for the usual linear dielectric between plates.

02. Series: 1/C = Σ 1/Ci (same Q). Parallel: C = Σ Ci (same V).

03. Energy U = Q²/(2C) = ½ C V² = ½ Q V. With battery connected, U often rises when C rises; isolated, U falls when C rises.

04. Partial slabs, multiple dielectrics and air gaps map to series/parallel combinations of capacitors — redraw before computing.

05. C=Q/V for a two-terminal capacitor. Series shares Q, parallel shares V. Energy ½CV²=Q²/(2C)=½QV—pick the form that matches what is held fixed when you change the system.

06. Dielectric: κ raises C for fixed geometry. Isolated capacitor (Q fixed) lowers V and U; battery-connected (V fixed) raises Q and U. Insertion work and heat need that branch explicitly.

07. Equivalent networks: redraw before formula. Partial dielectric fill is series or parallel slabs depending on whether the interface is parallel or perpendicular to the plates.

Cross-topic stems

Mixed joins for this topic

Advanced rarely asks a chapter in isolation. These are tagged multi-idea Physics stems that touch Capacitance & Dielectrics — practise the knowledge bridge, not only the single-chapter drill.

Physics2026 · Paper 2 · Q15–Q16linked-numerical

Fluid flow between chambers + changing capacitance

Fluids – level vs time+Electrostatics – Capacitance+Dielectric / liquid between plates

Knowledge bridge

Step 1: from the linked fluid setup, find liquid height in the left chamber at t = 500 s. Step 2: translate that height (or remaining liquid fraction) into the dielectric fill between capacitor plates. Step 3: compute ΔC = (8−n)ε₀ and extract n.

Why it feels hard

Two chapters share one clock variable t; errors in height propagate into capacitance.

What to practise

Practise fluid+capacitor linked numericals where the same h(t) feeds both answers.

Capacitance/field linked numerical chain

Electrostatics – Capacitance+Electric field+Linked numericals

Knowledge bridge

Step 1: draw the capacitor/field configuration and label charge/potential. Step 2: solve the first NUM for a base quantity (C, E, V). Step 3: propagate that value through linked asks (energy, force, series/parallel changes).

Why it feels hard

Long electrostatic chains amplify one early algebra mistake.

What to practise

In linked EM stems, verify units of the first answer before continuing.

Why methods matter

Common methods that change your score

Battery-versus-isolated constraints decide every dielectric and energy result.

Sample question

A parallel-plate capacitor charged to Q and isolated is filled partially with a dielectric slab of dielectric constant κ and thickness t < d (area full). Find the new potential difference.

This Advanced-level variation couples hidden constraints with the dielectric insertion model.

Model chosenTreat as two capacitors in series: dielectric + vacuum gap.

Processed solution

  1. Dielectric part: C₁=κε₀A/t; vacuum gap: C₂=ε₀A/(d−t).
  2. 1/C=1/C₁+1/C₂ ⇒ C=ε₀A/(t/κ+d−t).
  3. Q fixed ⇒ V=Q/C=Q(d−t+t/κ)/(ε₀A).

AnswerV=Q(d−t+t/κ)/(ε₀A)

Takeaway: Partial slabs become series capacitors when plates are parallel.

Find Q, V, U with the conserved quantity; ΔU and battery work if asked.

Compute with ratios and conserved quantities first. Carry direction, SI units and powers of ten on the rough sheet instead of repairing them at the end.

  4. 75–90s
Check κ→1 limit, series vs parallel redraw, and which energy formula matches constraints.

Check dimensions, limiting cases (κ→1, r→∞, ω→0/∞) and physical sense. For multi-correct, test every option independently.
